Spain’s PM Calls on China to Help End Wars in Middle East, Ukraine

(MENAFN) Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called on China to play a more active role in addressing ongoing global conflicts, including wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, according to reports.

During a speech at Tsinghua University in Beijing, Sánchez suggested that Beijing’s international influence could be used to encourage adherence to international law and help de-escalate several active crises. He referenced conflicts involving Lebanon, Iran, Gaza, the West Bank, and Ukraine, urging that they be brought to an end.

“China can do more - for example, by demanding, as it is already doing, that international law be upheld and that conflicts in Lebanon, Iran, Gaza, the West Bank, and Ukraine come to an end,” Sánchez said.

The Spanish leader arrived in China on Saturday for a five-day official visit and is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping during the trip. This marks his fourth visit to the country since taking office.

According to reports, both Spain and China—both of which are expected to host US President Donald Trump next month—have criticized US-Israeli military actions against Iran, describing them as “unacceptable” and “illegal.”

Spain has also taken additional steps in response to the conflict, including restricting access to its airspace for US fighter jets involved in operations related to the Iran war, which is said to have begun on Feb. 28. It has also reportedly barred the United States from using military facilities on Spanish territory for these operations.

Sánchez emphasized the importance of international law in governing global relations, stating: “International law is the foundation of everything.”
