Spain Warns Israel’s West Bank Measures Threaten Two-State Solution
In a statement, officials in Madrid condemned Israel’s repeal of a law restricting real estate purchases and property registration in the West Bank, as well as new administrative measures granting Israeli authorities authority over alleged violations involving water management, environmental damage, and archaeological sites in Areas A and B.
Spain warned that these steps disrupt the status quo in the West Bank and undermine the territorial and political cohesion of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, including Gaza and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement also expressed concern over what it described as ongoing Israeli efforts to expand settlements in the West Bank, actions that Spain says are illegal under international law. Officials recalled previous condemnations of Israel’s approval in December of 19 new settlements and developments connected to the E1 project, a controversial settlement plan east of Jerusalem.
"These measures and any attempt at annexation are unacceptable and jeopardize current efforts to implement the Peace Plan and the ceasefire, increasing the risk of triggering a new wave of violence," the statement said.
Spain urged Israel to fulfill its responsibilities as an occupying power under the Fourth Geneva Convention, calling for an end to its expansionist policies and the impunity afforded to illegal settlers.
The criticism follows Israel’s security cabinet approval on Sunday of measures designed to modify the legal and civil framework in the West Bank to strengthen Israeli control, according to reports.
