Spanish PM Highlights Need to Safeguard Minors from Social Media Risks
Speaking at the closing session of the 8th National Industry Congress in Bilbao, Sanchez emphasized the need for tighter regulation of digital platforms, particularly to safeguard minors.
“The power of the state is there to protect democracies from the attacks they suffer and also children and adolescents from that toxic, unpunished world that social media has unfortunately become,” he said, according to reports.
The remarks come amid high-profile criticism of Spain’s plan to restrict social media access for children under 16. Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov warned that the measures could threaten “internet freedoms” and risk turning Spain into a “surveillance state,” while US tech billionaire and X owner Elon Musk called Sanchez a “totalitarian fascist” and a “tyrant.”
Sanchez rejected these claims, arguing that the proposed regulations do not constitute censorship or authoritarianism. He said the debate should focus on the goals of technological innovation and protecting vulnerable users, rather than labeling the policies as oppressive.
