Spain Expedites Bill to Enforce Arms Embargo on Israel

(MENAFN) Spain’s legislative body has moved to fast-track legislation aimed at implementing an arms embargo against Israel, as reported by various news outlets.

Several political groups—Sumar, Podemos, the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), Basque EH Bildu, and the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG)—formally presented a request to the Congressional Bureau for the "urgent procession" of the bill, according to a news agency.

This initiative received backing from Premier Pedro Sanchez’s Socialist Party, which led to its approval.

The endorsement significantly reduced the standard legislative timeline, quickening the bill’s advancement.

This decision follows a symbolic resolution passed by the parliament on May 20.

That resolution urged the government to initiate an arms embargo on Israel due to its military actions in the Gaza region.

Although the motion was not legally binding, it reflected growing political pressure within the country.

The proposal originated from the Sumar alliance—a member of the governing coalition—and received the support of opposition parties including Podemos and the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC).

It narrowly passed with 176 votes in favor and 171 against, illustrating a divided but committed legislative stance on the issue.
