Spain Rushes Arms Embargo Bill Targeting Israel
A coalition of parties—including Sumar, Podemos, Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), Basque EH Bildu, and the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG)—filed a petition with the Congressional Bureau demanding urgent processing of the embargo bill, reported a media outlet.
This push, which also gained backing from Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s Socialist Party, secured approval to cut the bill’s timeline in half, expediting its advancement.
The move follows a non-binding parliamentary motion passed on May 20 that called on the government to halt arms sales to Israel in reaction to its military actions in the Gaza Strip.
Introduced by the leftist Sumar alliance—part of the ruling coalition—alongside opposition parties Podemos and ERC, the motion passed narrowly with a 176-171 vote.
